Last New Years

We are about 30 minutes from the Malaysian New Year, so while we wait we thought we would give a few photos from last new year!

Two years ago it was in Farmington, last year in Detroit with Grandma Kaiser and this year in KL!   Life is a whirlwind!

Christmas Cheer

Hi All,

I just wanted to wish everyone a Merry Christmas!  We are leaving tomorrow for a week on our Borneo adventure. Will return and tell you all about it!

-Kim

Sometimes I feel like we are having too much fun for this life to be real.  It is good to be back in a job I love, in a place that is new and exciting with my wife who is always up for any adventure that we stumble upon.  But in the midst of all this excitement there is not a day that goes by that we don't think of all of our family and friends back home.  We wish you all a Merry Merry Christmas...we love you all very much.  We have learned that the holidays are 99% who you are with, and 1% where you're at.

KL Hooligans in the Park

We went for a walk in the city park on Saturday afternoon and a troop of Monkeys were just hanging out munching on some bananas.  Living in a place with wild monkeys has to be one of the coolest things...just another charming thing about KL that makes life here so enjoyable!

This is me...

...finishing my book on Friday evening.

When the moon hits your eye...

David and I love all kinds of different foods. Our favorites are Indian, Thai and Lebanese. Besides these (the healthy choices) we also love to eat PIZZA! PIZZA! PIZZA! and more PIZZA! In the U.S we have this tradition that about every week we eat pizza. This has not been the case here in K.L because we haven't found the perfect pizza yet. We've tried Pizza Hut (Bad) and Canadian Pizza (David likes it, not me). I did find a Dominos Pizza in our new neighborhood and tonight we're going to try it and hope for the best! YEAHH! I've got high hopes for this one! Or maybe it's better that we just don't eat pizza altogether? ....NAH!

Ps. Our all time favorite pizza (ever) was served up by a amateur pop star with a faux-hawk in a small coastal town called Rio Maggiore, Italy.

You Have to Say...Bah-Tee(k)

Yesterday I searched all over the internet for Batik painting classes.  Batik is a technique used in Malaysia to dye fabrics.  By hand the artisan uses a tool called a canting to outline a pencil drawn out pattern with wax.  Then the fabric is dyed using a brush.  It seems like a very straight forward process.  I find a place called Fine Art Batik Training Center taught by Mr. Sam.  http://www.fine-art-batik.com/index.html

I contact Mr. Sam this morning to see if I can visit the classroom.  I'm surprised because he tells me he can meet with me at around 11:00 while he's teaching a class. That's in 30 minutes!
After a five minute teksi ride I arrive at the training center which is actually a residential home and meet Mr. Sam, his wife and friendly dog.  aww..I miss my dog Katie..  I enter the home and in the center of the living room is a very long table with around 10 women of all ages learning Batik.  It smells like burning wax and there's beautiful art work all around the room.

I sign up for class once a week for three hours! Mr. Sam then asks me if I would like to start today for free!  I'm not prepared, but of coarse I decide to stay.  He gets me to outline a simple drawing of hibiscus flowers and then demonstrates to me how to use the canting.  It looks very simple to do, just like using a pencil but when I try to draw a straight line it just doesn't work out!  Ha Ha!  I had such high hopes.  While I practice in silence I listen to the Chinese ladies chatting next to me.  I can only imagine what they are saying.  Can't wait until next week!

Here is my favorite teksi story:

Taxi Driver: Soooo...you like KL?
David: Oh yeah, it's great!
Taxi Driver: Where you from?
David: Texas, in the USA!
Taxi Driver: Ahhhhhhh (as if he had a profound realization)!!! George Bush!!!
David: And cowboys!
Taxi Driver: Ah very nice. How much you pay rent?
David: uh (awkward!) 3000 ringgit
Taxi Driver: Too much! How much your company pay you?
David: Sorry, that's personal.
Taxi Driver: You married?
David: Yes!
Taxi Driver: Lot's of kids, lah!?!?!
David: No, not yet (Important to say 'not yet', as you will dissappoint 99% anybody who asks)
Taxi Driver: ohhh...(looks down as if I cannot have kids, as opposed to choose not to have kids...yet)
You only want one wife? (devilish smile)
David: Trust me, one wife is enough!
David and Taxi Driver: HAHAHAHA!!!!!

Conversations with a Taxi Driver

A popular subject amongst us expats is the taxi drivers in K.L.   From my own experiences I've noticed that they like to chat, ask personal questions, and with an exception of a few, they are generally very nice.  I'll share one of my conversations with you.

This is after chatting about the weather and how the taxi driver is studying English at a local University.

Taxi Driver:  Are you married?
Kim:  Yes, I am.
Taxi Driver:  Do you have any kids?
Kim:  No, not yet.  We just got married in March.
Taxi Driver:  Ah..you foreigners like to work things out first before having children. Kind of like Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt!
Kim:  Yeah..I guess???  (Kim thinking to herself..Angelina and Brad? huh? I'm confused!)

I'M back!

We finally got our internet up yesterday at the apartment, so I will continue with our blog! YEAHH!  Hope you didn't miss me too much.

One Busy Weekend

Friday, December 5
16:15
David calls Kim at the Ascott and asks her to meet him downstairs in the reception area as soon as possible. Without questioning this request, Kim grabs her purse, takes the lift downstairs and meets David and asks him where they're going to.  David says, "Bill Clinton will have a lecture at the K.L. convention center, and they are giving away free tickets to a number of people." O.K. Sounds like fun. Lets go! "
16:36
David and Kim arrive at the registration desk in the convention center and ask if there are still tickets available. They do have tickets available but find out that business attire is required and that registration time closes at 5:00 p.m.  Kim's wearing her comfy jeans, t-shirt and flip-flops after her sweaty day spent in China Town, and David's wearing his Friday work jeans. They speed walk/run back to the Ascott hotel in order to change outfits.
16:41
Back at the room, Kim changes quickly into her black dress, puts on her high-heels and some eyeliner and on their way back!

16:59
They made it! and look'n good!
18:20
After patiently waiting they finally announce the 42nd president of the United States, Bill Clinton!  This is his first visit to Malaysia. Mr. President explains to us the reason for his tardiness was the bad traffic. The crowd chuckles, because they all know about the traffic jams in K.L!   After an interesting lecture, David and Kim grab some dinner and head back home for an early night.
ps. Happy Sinterklaas!  (google it!)  Thanks ma, for the chocolade and speculaas.
Saturday, December 6th
8:00
David and Kim wake up nice and early with enough time to take a shower, get dressed, eat breakfast and pack their bags for their second weekend out of K.L.
11:00
At the bus terminal they are told to wait in a specific area for their bus to leave to Ipoh.  It's 11 a.m, their departure time and there's no bus.  David tells Kim, "I''ll be right back..this doesn't seem right"  In just a few minutes he runs back towards Kim and says, "come this way! our bus is about to leave!" Kim runs behind David and they jump into the right bus and sit down, relieved. wow! "David, you're awesome!"
11:30-16:00
The bus ride is supposed to be only 2.5 hrs.  Instead it's 4.5 due to holiday traffic.  David and Kim's seats are right behind the bus driver who has a frequent issue with loud expulsions of bodily stomach contents, liquid and solid.  There is a sign posted in the front of the bus which says, no smoking.  This does not stop the bus driver from smoking a cigarette every 30 minutes.  Between smoking and his loud bodily noises, he often yells at people in Malay and almost leaves an older Indian woman behind at the rest stop.  This drives mostly Kim, and partly David insane.  In David words, they both call this bus ride the worst ever!
16:30
David and Kim get picked up at the Gopeng bus terminal by Ian, who is the manager of Rumah Rehat Adeline.  The drive takes about 20 minutes off road through the jungle.  Ian rolls down the windows and asks, 'fresh air, lah?" "LAH!"
17:20 and on..
They arrive at their jungle resort. (www.rumahrehatadeline.com) The grounds consist of traditional Malay housing. Since David and Kim arrive late, they don't get to have first pick on huts.  They both are not too happy with their hut. It's a little dirty and is built right in front of a man made pond and trash surrounds the grounds. They go for it anyways.  They eat a delicious meal made by Adeline at 18:30 and then supper at 20:00.  Yes, food is served here all the time! Great tea by the way! After a couple of rounds of ping-pong and a card game of "speed", David and Kim decide to go to their cozy hut where they practice saying 1 through 10 in Malay and then fall asleep.

Sunday, December 7
8:00
David and Kim are late for breakfast. They didn't get the note that breakfast is at 7:30. They still get a traditional Malay breakfast which includes coconut rice, egg, prawn and veggies. yum.yum.  David asks the camp host for a better hut along the natural creek and gets it!  David saves the day, again!
10:30
David and Kim get picked up by Nomad Adventures to go white water rafting and caving!!  They join another group of 12 students from K.L.  First of all, the group gets asked who can swim.  About 5 of them can't.  UH! OH!  Good thing they all have life-jackets!  David and Kim put on their life-jackets, helmets and grab their paddles and head down to the 3-4 class river. They are excited because with their luck most of the water is a class 4 because of the rain season!  Exciting!  Kim and David can't wait.  Everybody is ready to go, and then they get told by the guides to jump and float down the river.  The guides want to make sure how comfortable the group is in water and how well the group swims.. The guide asks who wants to go first.  Silence.. 30 seconds later David steps up and says, "I'll go!" In no time, David floats down the river on his back around the corner, flips around to his stomach and swims to the other side of the river.  Kim follows suit, along with the rest of the group..30 minutes later.. More than half of the group get stuck in an eddie and couldn't swim across the river.
11:30-13:30
The group enjoys two hours of adventurous white water river rafting.  A total of four people fall off the rafts.  One person gets punched in the nose with their own paddle and needs to leave to the hospital because of bleeding.  Our guide leaves the boat and walks about in the jungle and comes back with a total of three leeches, yes leeches, on his leg and foot. He pulls them off his own body and just holds them in his hands as if it they are a pretty flower of some sorts. yuck.
We arrive at the end and enjoy a wonderful lunch in the jungle alongside the river. leechless.
14:00
David and Kim join the same group of students for caving in the 8th largest cave in Peninsular Malaysia.  This cave was once occupied by the Chinese communists during world war I.  They noted Chinese writings on the walls several times. This is by far Kim's favorite part of the day because of all the crawling and rock climbing. They end up going first and having to wait for the group the whole time, but it is fun exploring into the darkness with their own flashlight and headlamp.  At the end of the trip the group gets a good surprise because they get to go down the fox-flight or all known as a zip-line. Nervously, Kim videotapes David going first and then goes down next. How fun!  This reminds them of their trip to Costa Rica in 2007.
David and Kim hike down the trail back to the truck in which they patiently wait, along with hundreds of mosquitos, for the rest of the group to arrive.
18:30
Another delicious and well deserved dinner at camp. David and Kim take a shower in the creek and then resume to read a book, draw and then back to bed with the sound of the rain hitting the roof top of their hut.
Monday, December 8  (public holiday)
7:00-10:55
David and Kim wake up, get dressed, eat breakfast and get a ride to town to catch a bus ride home to K.L.
10:55
They arrive at the bus station, buy their tickets and ask when the bus leaves.. "right now!" They run to the bus location, hop on a bus. Yes, it was on a bus, but not the right bus, but they knew it was to K.L so they decided to stay.
11:00-13:30
Cramped on the bus for 2.5 hrs David and Kim read and take a short nap. No loud bus driver this time, just some pleasant Indian music playing in the background.
14:00
David and Kim arrive at Hawk Car Rental next door to the Ascott hotel. The reason they rented a vehicle is because they are finally moving into their new apartment tomorrow!  Right now David's watching Jurassic park and Kim's getting her blog on.  More updates to come!  Soon there might be a MTV Cribs in the works.

Helicopter Ride

I took this picture to remind us of how short life really is.  Last night the wing broke on this tiny remote control helicopter and now David does not have a way to annoy me while I'm drawing or searching the web! How sad life can be.. R.I.P, little helicopter.. I will miss you dearly.. "NOT!!"

Saya Orang Belanda

Borneo is an island with diverse wildlife such as the Orang-Utan, sea turtles, meat eating plants and the endangered Proboscis Monkey known for its prominent nose. The local Malays have a nickname for this interesting looking monkey and that is Orang Belanda, which in English translates to Dutch Man, after the Dutch colonialists. Do you see the resemblance?

I thought I might need to see this monkey in person, so I booked a flight to Sandakan, Borneo. David and I will be singing Christmas carols and exchanging gifts on the third largest island in the world this year!  Ho! Ho! Ho!

Happy Thanksgiving!!!

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday; we have always pulled it off well, and developed some great traditions.

Back in the Barker days it was good food and good fights; 2nd cousins smoking cigarettes and the dream that one day, Meem and Bup would get that derelict jacuzzi running. Whether it was at our house with Mom somehow pulling 11 pies, 2 turkeys, and all the fixin's (goooooooooood eatin') out of one oven, or the same spread of food and music DVDs at Uncle Keith's, it was always a great time...REAL family.

Later on as we grew older and the family started to fragment, Thanksgiving was a moment of hope for us all...one last stab at a 'normal' family. I was coming home, full of fight (fight for family, not with)...then leaving with an overwhelming sense of flight. These times were rough, but the dinner was always 'safe ground' where everything was alright.

Now that we are in the early adult stage, the holiday has changed quite a bit. We still eat copious amounts of food all day, watch tv, enjoy the cool fall air; but the guests are a delightful assortment of new family, old friends, new friends, co-workers and neighbors to metion a few. There were over 20 people last year at Liz's place on Hopkins!

While everybody is now in there respective part of the world, we are looking forward to yet another wonderful Thanksgiving. We will fill our table (at Chili's! HA!) with good people, eat good food, and as always, go around the table and say what we are thankful for.

As for the rest of the family, Liz and DK will be joining the Olden's for their dinner; Dad, Mary, Joe, Missy, Nate, Brent, and Brittany will have dinner in Michigan; and Andy will be with his friend James and the rest of the crew in St. Croix (No turkey, just rum).

We are spread all over, but we still have all the necessary elements: Good food, people you trust & love and a strong appreciation for all that we have.

Fun. Fresh. Flavorful.

Have you ever heard of an American chain restaurant called Chili's? Oh, you have? We do to!  There is one located at the mega mall KLCC just a few minutes walk from our hotel.
Since we have an extremely tiny kitchen without an oven, I decided to cancel any attempts at making a Thanksgiving dinner this year. (Maybe next year in our grand apartment?)  Now, what better place to have dinner then at our all American restaurant Chili's on Thanksgiving Day? We'll let you know how it goes! Maybe we'll even get to dip our burgers in some curry.

Cameron Highlands

Before I start this blog I would like to mention the unique combination of music that we listened to during our long drive. It's quite the selection!  Bjork, best of Miles Davis, Gorillaz, early Greenday, Calypso compilation, Justin Timberlake ('cry me a river!') , Sonya Kitchell, and to top it off KORN!

On Saturday at seven o'clock in the morning David and I get up, grab our bags and head North in our 1.6L Nissan rental car to the Cameron Highlands. This area is known for its lush green rolling hills, tea plantations, and British colonial architecture.

We find our way out of K.L. with two maps (yes, two) and drive for two hours on the Expressway past palm oil plantations until we get to the town called Tapah.  From there they say that '60km on a long and winding climb with hundreds of bends can make an uncomfortable
journey' but David and I are extremely entertained!  We dodge cars, large trucks, dogs and kids while I scream pretty much at every single turn.  Note that David has a big grin on his face this entire time.  Yes, very entertaining I must say.  At the 20km marker we get out of car, stretch our legs and view the beautiful waterfall and visit a number of roadside shacks that sell produce and handy crafts.

Finally after an hour and a half we reach Tanah Rata which is the town we are supposed the spend the night.  We drive through town but realize it isn't the small, colonial, quiet town that we expected.  It's dirty, noisy with construction and tourists everywhere!  We drive to the next town but it gets worse!  We left K.L. in order to get some fresh air, but instead inhale nasty fumes and there's trash everywhere! David pulls over and stares out of the car window for a very awkward five minutes.  At that point we decide to call it a loss and head  back to K.L. (This is when things started looking up) On the way back we stumble upon a cozy British cottage and have a cup of local tea and hot biscuits.

With that out of the way, we stop at a place that sells all sorts of plants and cacti.  We buy a lavender plant and 5 cactus plants for only $4!  Our next stop is Ee Feng Gu Honey Bee Farm. We walk around the flower and bee filled gardens and taste some of the honey straight off the honey comb!  yum yum.  On our way back to the car David notices a sign to the Boh Tea Estate.  After 8km on another small, windy road (this time only one lane) with amazing views of the lush tea plantation we finally get to the main entrance.  David parks the car, we step out and follow directions to the look-out point.  We slowly climb the hill and get to the top and the view is just absolutely amazing. This is definitely worth the drive to the Cameron Highlands.  We are a long ways away from the dirt, the noise, the people. We take a deep breath and enjoy the peace and the lovely smell of the fresh tea.  Loving the world once again we decide to go home.

Right before we get to the main road David asks me, "do you hear that?" "Does that sound like a rock or does our tire have a leak in it?" oh, oh!  I stick my head out of the window to look. Yes, definitely a flat tire..  We stop the car, change the tire, and on we go!  This is the part when we listen to our KORN CD.  After another 3.5hrs drive we get back the Ascott hotel and have the best sleep of our life, with a full day on Sunday to just simply relax!

This one is not hot!

I bought 6 green chili peppers for our Malaysian Tacos to add some spice to them. When I tried a tiny piece it tasted just like a bell pepper! Even with the seeds. Bummer..

Rain or Shine?

On the 22nd floor of our hotel is a cute garden with all sorts herbs, flowers and plants. I've been wanting to go up there and draw some of these Malaysian plants but with my luck the last couple of days it has been raining! So, instead today I stayed inside the room and drew a garlic head with a CD of Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong playing in the background. "Isn't it a Lovely Day?"

Progress!!!

The owners of our dream apartment have accepted our offer and we are set to move in on Dec 1st!!!! Yeah!!!!!

Happy Tree!

My fellow art friends, you can now visit me here in K.L., because I have found an art supply store!  I have to warn you, it is not as big and entertaining as Texas Art Supply in Houston, but it is located in Chinatown and they do carry all sorts of brushes, paints and canvas.  In Bob Ross his own words that's all we need to paint a happy tree!

The sketch is the view from our hotel balcony. I spent about 15 minutes on it and remember, I can't use my index finger!!!

Quantum of Solace...the short version

Last night we went and saw the new Bond film, and were a little disappointed that the there were several edits to the film, most noticeably in the opening scene.  Essentially, the 'sexy' was taken out of Bond...
We will have to get back to the states to see the full version...which is a bit sad...homesickness setting in!

KL Nights

It's Friday!!!   And a long one too...  Things are really picking up with the office here in KL, which is very exciting.

I got off work
and headed home to check up on Kim.  She was in much higher spirits than earlier that morning so we went out for a drink at the Traders Hotel.  It's a short walk through the KLCC gardens and directly across from the Petronas Towers.
 Great view and expensive drinks.

We stayed for a bit and then met up with our friend Subra, who led our expedition through a maze of side streets, shopping malls and open markets, to a bar called Twentyone.

We sat there for about three hours, and had great drinks, an excellent dinner and semi-intelligent conversation!
Midway through the evening a heavy rain came through and cooled the air down.  All up it was a great night out.
We navigated out way back, taking a different route, all the while keeping eyes on the tower as a point of reference.

The towers were lit up blue, which was a first for us.
We said goodbye to Subra and crashed when we got home.  It was 10:30...  I'm going to use Kim's jetlag as an excuse for turning in so early!
Big weekend planned!

Why mom is always right

The week before leaving the States, mom suggested that I pack some band-aids and Nestosyl (Dutch Neosporin) just in case I have an accident.  I roll my eyes thinking what could possibly happen? I never get hurt! Wink, Wink.  Actually, I am possibly one of the more clumsier people here on earth, but that's another story.  I eventually throw some band-aids and the Nestosyl in with my toiletries and go my way.

This morning I get dressed in my brand new NIKE work-out clothes made in Malaysia, and take the elevator to our hotel gym on the 22nd floor.  I open the door, and step on through. The door closes quicker then I think it will and smashes my index finger! OUCH!  I look at it and it actually cut open my finger pretty badly.  I wont get in too much detail, but I freak out and think that I have a broken finger or that I need stitches.  I quickly go to our apartment and call David at work and tell him the bad news, all the while crying like a little baby.  He gets here in five minutes and looks at my smashed up finger. No broken finger, and the cut isn't deep enough to where I need stitches.  But what I actually need is a band-aid and Nestosyl!

Thanks ma! Thanks David for coming to my rescue!

And let the drums roll...

As of today, David and I are officially residents of Malaysia!

The Durian

A couple of evenings ago, after attending a cocktail party, Mike (David's boss), David, and I had an appetite and decided to get some food down the road from our hotel.  David and I shared a plate of some kind of chicken, rice and hot sauce that I don't know the name of.  It was delicious!  By the way, pretty much 50% of the time I have no clue what I am eating, and the majority of the time the food tastes perfectly fine.  Then we have the durian..

Wikipedia says, "the durian is the fruit of trees from the genus Durio belonging to the Malvaceae, a large family which includes hibiscus, okra, cotton, mallows, and linden trees.  Widely known and revered in Southeast Asia as "King of Fruits", the fruit is distinctive for its large size, unique odour, and formidable thorn-covered husk."

After our tasty dinner we head back home and pass up a stall with hundreds of spiky, smelly durians.  Should we get one? I heard they actually taste pretty good. Yes we should!  We pick one out. The guy splits it in three pieces and there we go. The first reaction was from Mike. He said "it's an acquired taste, isn't it?" Secondly was David.  It took a few minutes but he was very vocal about not liking this "King of Fruits".  "I just can't get over the custard like consistency!"  Local's are laughing at us at this moment, and screaming "DURIAN!".  All this time I'm still wondering if I like it. The hard thing is to separate the taste from the smell. Shouldn't the things we eat smell good?  OK-I have decided. I am not a fan. Where's the trash can?

Since this was one of our first smellable K.L. experiences we have decided to name our blog Durian Delights!  Hope you enjoy!
